Hello, and welcome (or welcome back)!
I hope everyone is doing well and feeling safe, healthy, and happy :).
On this week’s blog, we are going to about one of my favorite things—FOOD!
Food can be a source of comfort when you are not feeling your best. Generally, i’m not feeling my best (physically) it means that my Sickle Cell Disease is causing me serious pain. The type of pain that makes you want to find solace in your bed forever and ever.
In addition to the heating pad, water, and pain meds that I grab before I beeline for my Bob-o-pedic mattress, I also make sure to grab a few snacks. Not only do I need to eat something before I take any type of medication, but food can also provide a sense of strength against the uphill battle I am facing.
Without further adieu, here are my top 5 ‘feel better’ snacks:
- Apple slices with peanut butter. Apples are great because they are 86% water, nutritious, and low maintenance. Peanut butter is just an added bonus!
- Chocolate covered pretzels. An indulgent treat I can never get enough of. It’s sweet, it’s salty, and it can take my mind off of a lot. My favorite variety come from Trader Joe’s!
- Simply Popped Popcorn. I love popcorn, but i’m not a fan of the overly-buttery or overly-salty variety. I like the light popcorn that you can dress up any way you choose! Plus, popcorn goes great with the movies and tv shows you are inevitably going to watch if you don’t feel well.
- Lemon ices. Again, I love a snack that has the power of hydration. Lemon ices serve as a filling snack, and a refreshing drink if you let it melt a little.
- Grilled cheese sandwich. Nothing like a cheesy, crispy, golden grilled cheese sandwich. It embodies the word comfort, full stop.
These snacks work wonders for me, but every person is different. Stick to what works for you, and if you’re in the mood to try something new, then go for it! Also, don’t be afraid to ask someone to bring you these snacks while you are not feeling well. I struggled for a long time with not wanting to be a burden for someone else. But the truth of the matter is, the people in your life love you. They are more than willing to help in most case. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Until next time….
Stay safe and stay magical!
Ashley, MCT
